Open Mic Night Empty
PostSubject: Open Mic Night   Open Mic Night Icon_minitimeSun Mar 22, 2009 3:57 pm

Every day I see the sun rise mixing pink, orange, and red in the sky.
Children playing on the corner waiting for the school bus.
Every day I hear the radio doling out the atrocities of the world
Then quickly change to a ‘human interest’ story just to provide us with some ‘good news’
Every day my daughter brings to light the simple beauties of the world.
While every morning I’m running around frantic to get out the door…late again
Every day the boss screams about deadlines impossible to meet
And co-workers complaining about one thing or another; completely disinterested beyond their own problems.
Every day there is life, death, happiness, stress, depression, elation, love, sex, etc.
And still every day the sun remains unaffected, continuing its path across the sky.

Ok, I suck at poetry; this is just something that I spontaneously regurgitated and thought it sounded good at the time. Actually the real reason I’m here at this open mic night is to support my high school friend who is a terrific folk singer. I think she and the rest of her ‘folky’ friend deserve more of an audience then a bunch of self-centered, over-caffeinated drones. My mind spins at the thought of how quickly this place could be converted to a nationally hip coffee chain/internet bar and it disgusts me. I like this place, dark and personal with old, faded black and white photos of the area hanging on the wall; places such as these are a rarity.

Although not my first choice of music, I love Cadence like a sister and would do anything for her. I was happy to hear from her since it had been years since we’ve seen each other but we always kept in touch. To me that’s a good friend: even if you haven’t seen each other in years, you can pick up as if you haven’t been apart. The downside to all of this: getting hit on by Cady’s lesbian friends. I tell them that I’m “happily heterosexual…for now’ which translates to ‘ain’t no fuckin’ way I’m sleeping with you.’ The ‘heterosexual’ line makes them laugh and then go away; two of my favorite things. I love to sing but the best is singing with Cady, it reminds me of high school and sitting in her back yard among the trees and a babbling brook covering Indigo Girls tunes then going inside her house to chill out to KMFDM. We have a very eclectic taste in music, my evil twin and I.

We start the set and I feel my whole body transcend as the air is filled with our voices, the djembe I’m playing, and Cady’s six-string. The vibe is very ‘earthy’…tribal, I can feel the energy from the audience as they interact with Cady’s song “Evolve” which involves everyone who played that night and suddenly becomes a folk jam session. After the set, we quietly packed our stuff and talked with others in the crowd about albums that were available, where we were playing next, etc. Suddenly, I heard a very distinct, very familiar voice from the speakers; it didn’t sound like a recording so I turned my head to the stage and froze…I was speechless. Awestruck, I watched him passionately perform his prose from ‘Cool Gardens’; a book I read a million times. I adored the way his whole body reacted to his poetry and I admit his own interpretation was infinitely better.

Cady returned with a beverage of caffeinated goodness and whispered, “Who’s that?” as she handed me my coffee. “Serj Tankian” I whispered back not wanting to say too much and miss the performance. She looked mildly impressed with his poetry while I resembled a psychotic fan girl drooling over each word, every gesture until his piece was done. Enthusiastically, I applauded while others around me merely joined their hands out of sheer politeness. Could I be the only one in this place who knows what an incredibly gifted individual graced us with his presence?

He collected his things and stepped off the stage making for the back patio overlooking the river for a smoke more than likely. It took all of my willpower to not chase after him and make a complete jerk out of myself. I gave him enough time to relax and take in the beauty of the water…maybe he was taking in the beauty of the water as I opened the door and carefully said, “Excuse me? Serj?” He turned around to face me with such grace I found myself stunned, “I wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed your performance.” I stammered, “Can I buy you a coffee?” I couldn’t believe how utterly ridiculous that sounded. His lips curled in a slight smile as if he could detect my uncertainty. “I don’t usually accept coffee from strangers…” then he hit me with that famous broad smile that made my heart melt. Suddenly, I caught the hint and laughed nervously as I introduced myself, completely embarrassed with my lack of manners. I took his order and excused myself then returned minutes later with two green teas with lemon.

He graciously thanked me, took a sip then said, “You have a beautiful voice. How long have you been singing?” I blushed at the sudden compliment and pulled out my standard joke, “Since I came out of the womb.” I giggled, “I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t singing. It has helped me through some tough times and I find it very therapeutic.” That sentiment earned me a thoughtful smile as it sparked a long discussion of musical passion, friends, college, and stalwart friendships. “She’s a really talented woman with one of the most beautiful souls I have ever met. I’m very lucky to have her in my life.”

“Have you ever recorded anything?” he inquired.

“Just one time when I was in a cover band in college plus doing back up for Cady and Brenda” I answered.

He took another sip from his tea and commented, “You have a very soulful voice. Who are your influences?” That question made me feel like I was in an interview. I thought about it for minute then said, “My mother listened to a lot of Motown so growing up, I listened to a lot of Aretha, Temptations, Sam & Dave but I really love Janis which was more of my father’s tastes.”

He chuckled that in that low throaty way that really turned me on. “I thought so although you sound more like Linda Ronstadt.” I didn’t know if that was an insult or compliment.

“So…what brings you to this area?” I asked attempting to keep the conversation going.

“I’m playing a couple shows at the Garde and I really enjoy walking around the city to take in the culture. I saw this place and decided to stop in. I’m glad I did.” He smiled again and I could feel myself blush again, my heart racing. I smiled shyly, not knowing what else to say. I could tell Serj could feel my nervousness so he asked about my poem that I did tonight, “I thought it was deep.” I couldn’t hide my shock, “You liked it?” I was flabbergasted; Serj Tankian enjoyed my poetry? He nodded earnestly. “If you don’t mind me asking, what’s your inspiration?” “Um…life.” He laughed at my quick-witted answer as we continued to take in the beauty of the river and appreciate each other’s company.

“There’s a great place that my father took me to when I was a little girl where I write most of my stories.” I mentioned, “It has old Native American tribal markings on the rock face and was a great place to party; that’s how my father discovered it. “Sounds like a great place.” “Do you want to see it? It’s not that far from here.” I was surprised at my own brazenness but before I could take back my question, Serj smiled, “I’d love to.” It took me a minute to realize that he said ‘yes’.

Open Mic Night Empty
PostSubject: Re: Open Mic Night   Open Mic Night Icon_minitimeSun Mar 22, 2009 3:57 pm

I went back inside to see my friends were gone. Cady always had enough tact to make herself scarce when she sees me with a guy but this was no ordinary guy…I collected my things and we walked to my car. The short ride was filled with more polite conversation while I was still trying to wrap my brain around the whole situation. We reached the long driveway and noticed Lois’ lights still on. We walked the 50 yards to the house and I knocked on the door.

A port elder woman with a friendly smile opened the door and greeting us with a warm smile despite the lateness of the hour. “Mia!” she screamed with joy as she wrapped her arms around me. “How’s your dad?” “He’s fine. This is my friend, Serj?” She smiled knowingly at the gentleman and I continued, “We were talking about the cliff and I wanted to show him.” “I see” she teased as she grabbed her flashlight and a blanket.

We wandered through the brush with only Lois’ light and the waxing moon to guide our way. Lois explained how she met my father to Serj. “I heard these hippies making a ruckus out on my property and I was about to call the cops but Butchie is very persuasive. He has a heart of gold and then he started bring his kids out here and I watched our little Mia grow up.” Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea and I was thankful for the darkness as Lois continued to gush. Finally she announced we had arrived then she directed Serj and I to sit while she walked over to the wood pile and started a campfire refusing help from either one of us. The flame illuminated the overhang and Lois, like a tour guide, explained that Pequot tribe inhabited these lands and how she didn’t know about its location until the night she met my father.

Then she pulled something out of her pocket, “Serj, do you smoke?” as she began to deftly roll a joint. My face might have mirrored my shock as she explained, “It’s for my glaucoma.” then winked. Serj let out a stifled laugh and I joined him. The three of us enjoyed the relaxing effects then suddenly Lois stood up and announced, “These old bones need to be in a bed.” She took the flashlight, gave me a kiss on my forehead, exchanged pleasantries with Serj, then she was gone.

We lay there, alone in our thoughts then Serj commented, “She’s nice.” “Mm…” I agreed sleepily. Suddenly he sat up from his rock, “What’s that?” I opened my eyes and noticed he was focusing on the lip of the rock. “What?” I asked. He moved closer to me and pointed to the area where he was looking, “There.” I leaned in closer to him to see what he was pointed at. Then I saw it. Half covered with soot from the multiple bonfires, was a mural of what looked to be the battle between the indigenous tribe and an invading European soldiers. “Oh my God, that’s so cool.” I whispered. “I wonder how long that’s been there.”

I noticed how close we were and I began to tremble. Serj grabbed the blanket, stoked the fire, threw some more wood on, and wrapped the blanket around us. Maybe it was the pot or feeling Serj’s warm body against mine but I welcomed his embrace as we watched the flames. My head resting on his collarbone, his chin resting on my head; I sighed in contentment. I felt his head move slightly as he began to plant small kisses on my hairline and feeling his hold around my body growing stronger. “This is a dream,” I told myself “so enjoy it.” I moved my body so I was sitting on my knees, facing him. His arms around my waist and mine around his neck as we peered into each other’s eyes; The shadows danced on his skin giving him a romantic glow as I slowly pressed my lips against his.

He returned the kiss softly as I allowed the sensation of our bodies intoxicate my mind. I parted my lips and invaded his mouth with my tongue tasting the mix of weed and lemon green tea. He responded in kind and I got the sense he was relinquishing control to me; allowing me to take this as far as I wanted and, at that moment, I wanted it all. I straddled his hips as my hands moved to the sides of his face, caressing his sideburns then letting my fingers run through his short curly hair. His hands stroked the material that covered my back letting his long fingers run over my spine. I gasped for air and he attacked the skin on my neck; it was as if he was reading my mind to what really turned me on. My eyes rolled back as he bit into my neck, my fingers clenching his shoulders, and I let out a gasp of desire. I took one of his hands and guided him past the fabric of my shirt and rested his palm over my left breast then kissed him hungrily. His fingers dug into the cup and freed the nipple which he gently pinched and teased; this sent me over the edge. I grabbed the bottom of my shirt and tore it off my body then reached behind me to free my breasts from their confinement.

Once gone, Serj continued to fan the desire within me. I unbuttoned his shirt and I could feel his throbbing manhood through his jeans. I went back to sitting on my knees so I could touch him. I bit his earlobe gently then slid my tongue down his neck, savoring the taste of his flesh as my hand moved between his legs. It was his turn to let me know that I was pleasing him when he let out a low groan. He gently pushed me away, laid out the blanket by the fire, then pulled me to him.

My hand gently stroked his upper body as he freed my hair from the ponytail and ran his fingers through my thick brown hair. “I want you” I growled in his ear. “I want you, too.” he whispered back hoarsely and I nearly fainted at the words. Simultaneously, we removed the last articles of clothing and as I was discarding my jeans, I turned to see Serj waiting for me on his knees. He grabbed my hands and pulled me close to him, his lips and tongue brushing my stomach; the feeling of his hot breath against me drove me insane with lust. He tilted his head up and took a nipple in his mouth while one of his hands moved over my womanhood. My knees buckled and Serj laughed helping down to the blanket. I could no longer control myself as I pleaded with him to fuck me. He reached in his back pocket and pulled out a condom. I took the package and with trembling hands rolled the rubber material over his shaft then looked up at him with a seductive smile as he kissed me again and rested his body on top of mine. It didn’t take much manipulation for him to find the mark as he slowly entered me. My entire exploded as he filled me again; I moved my hips yearning to feel every inch of him inside of me. Our lips met again as the primal need saturated the air; suddenly the universe and everything in it made complete sense. All emotions swirled around us like spirits; possessing us.

Then I felt my orgasm pull into a little ball and explode like a supernova. I looked up at my counterpart, my lover as his eyes were closed and the sweat beading on his furrowed brow then I felt him tense as he released then collapsed on top of me. We lie there in each other’s arms for an eternity then Serj pulled himself up onto his forearms and looked deep into my eyes. “You know, you are really beautiful when you cum.” I laughed and grabbed a quick kiss. “I didn’t know that mind reading was one of your talents.” I teased.

We cleaned up as best we could, got dressed then talked more until the east turned shades of orange and pink. I took the plastic pitcher that was next to the woodpile and walked down to brook to get some water. I came back to find Serj relieving himself on the fire. “Well, I brought this to finish the job because I don’t squat over open flame.” Serj let out a boisterous laugh and I shushed him while attempting to control my laughter. I poured the water over the embers making sure the fire was completely out.

We walked back to my car and I left a note on Lois’ door thanking her for everything then drove Serj back to town. He was strangely quiet and so was I, I suppose. His hotel was a few blocks down from the coffee shop. We sat in silence for a moment listening to my gas-guzzler burning fuel. He reached over and gently motioned my face to look at his. “Thank you…” he said sincerely, “for everything.” “You’re welcome” I grinned, “I really enjoyed it.” He kissed me gently then let himself out of my car. I watched him walk into his hotel waving goodbye before disappearing inside.

I sat there basking in the afterglow of making love with one of the most amazing men that have graced this planet. “I can’t wait to tell the girls on the forum.” I laughed as I put the car in ‘drive’ and drove home.
